I have a HP5200 Office Jet and have the same problem with the printer not working after it has worked and saying it does not recognize the laptop. So, if it worked before, go back to what configuration you originally used is what I found worked to solve my printer connectivity problems. Most of my ethernet runs are 50'+ through a multimedia panel in a bedroom closet - I dislike wires showing. Everything else worked fine with either switch. Now both printers are back to full speed printing! Older 8-port switch is a Netgear GSS108E the new switch is a TP-LINK 16-port TL-SG116. I thought well, most comments come in with printers working on slower speeds. After reading the above comments, I reinstalled the old "spare" switch, added it in line to the new switch and then connected both printers to the old switch and got the green light on both ports! They were amber on the new switch for the past 4-months. I realized most of the comments are WIFI related, but I too had no trouble for years until I installed a new gigabit ethernet switch to increase wired #ports. I have two Brother Printers, both MFC, 1-B&W and 1 Color. Do I have any options to keep the machine from constantly dropping the connection? I read somewhere else about "fixing" the IP address but before I mess with that want to make sure that is the right thing to do. I'm so frustrated and upset that something so new and not inexpensive is useless. There is no solid wall separating the two rooms-there's a large double doorway between them. I have a small condo (1000 square feet) and the printer is in the room next to where my modem is located. I never would have spent $150 for a wifi printer that needs to be literally next to my modem to work. They said that the printers are "very sensitive" yet it's a "wifi issue, not a printer issue". I called Brother and their response was that the printer needs to be within three to five feet of the router (?!?!?). I am beyond frustrated and I refuse to reset it up each and every time I have to print. I am able to successfully configure it and it works for an hour or so but the next day it displays an error message of "check connection". Since getting a new modem/router, the printer WILL NOT stay connected to my wifi.
